I am very sorry to hear this terrible news. Motorsport has lost an great personality today.

Mr. Hill meant a lot to the history of both motorsport and Ferrari.

Rest in piece "sharknose nr. 4" We will never forget...

Sad news indeed. I don't know very much about history but I know he was a great driver. A big name has passed away. R.I.P Phil. One day I will read about your achievements. And so many others will follow. You probably will never be forgotten.

I actually don't know anything about Phil Hill... So I'm wondering about the nickname 'Sharknose nr.4'
I've already found out that mr. Hill has driven in a Sharknose, that couple of years he was in the Ferrari-team. But why is the number 4 added to his nickname? Is that the particular number he drove with, in the year (1961) he won the championship for Ferrari?
(Searching for pics on google delivered me photo's with several different numbers on the sharknose, so he drove in nr.1 and nr.2 too?)

It is indeed the number he drove with in his championship year. Allthough he has raced with several numbers it was this nr. 4 which was the winning car. Therefore it became sort of "his number". Same thing happened with nr. 27 ( Gilles Villeneuve)

Have posted this picture allready in the dutch part "your favorite f1 cars" but i think i can post it here once more...

Hey, that's the Nürburgring (Nordschleife)?! Thanks for the great photo and the explainment of his nickname. Looking at his results, this man was indeed a great driver! It's quit sadly when a legendary man like him dies, but luckely he can be remembered (and live on) through tons of photo's on the internet..

While I was searching on youtube for footage from the '61 season I found this incredible movie! http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpyEfAdLQYc
Couple of sharknose Ferrari's participating, and a win for Ferrari! Not for Phil Hill this time (finished 9th this race), but it was Baghetti who won!

I'm wondering about the great quality of the movie (the only thing that misses is engine-sound). And also wondering about the people who are standing on the track!
Another thing I like about the movie is that the race is at REIMS (seems like a public road? Or was it an official race track?). And I know Reims because of another great movie (with the F40 and F50 flying over that straight road between the pit-buildings) http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=VPhPTE0MIwM
Incredible to see how it was almost 50 years ago, and how the road is use nowadays!

Also footage from Monaco, where Phil Hill is interviewed in Part 3: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=WjLwcNn_xh4&feature=related
Movie excists of 6 parts total... Can't believe my eyes. Drivers which where smoking sigarettes in their F1 cars during qualification! :)

The only US born Formula 1 champion. I met him on more the one occasion. Mostly vintage races at laguna Seca. Good by old friend.

Whow, that comes as a shock to me. I remember speaking with Phil Hill at Spa in the early ´90s where he drove a Ferrari 250TR like he never retired. And later during Le Mans Classic 2006. Hill still had the spirit and put the Alfa Romeo he was driving on 1st place. Great driver, nice person, never refused an autograph.
I will never change my avatar.

Although it's a bit late a reaction from me is certainly at it's place as I'm a big fan of the sharknose. The sport has lost a legend and he will be remembered. I have great respect for all of the drivers of that time. They were a bunch of dare devils who gave everything for the sport and respected each other as well!!. R.I.P.
