I love the simple fact that my 2 cars show 2 completly different ways to create a V8 sports car. RPM's Vs tourqe, Front vs. center engine. Refinment vs. simplicity, Europe vs US

Both cars are great fun

Hi everybody,

I am new to this site but I am very happy to be the 22nd French member. And lucky you, I bring two additional F cars to your list. Now 8 in France. I am lucky enough to have two F cars, a red Mondial T coupé (the kind of Ferrari you start with) and a Blue Swaters 456GT (when you know you really like Ferraris forever). I'll be happy to exchange with any Ferrari owners in France, Belgium, NetherLands... Based close to Paris, France.

Yes,117S is my car, it was born in 1951 like a 195 inter and was rebodied in 1956 with his 750 monza Scaglietti Barchetta all alu.
117S is "a barn find" who come from the south of California and was found by Marcel Massini : The car was owned by the same owner during 40 years (1966-2006).
I have beginning a "light" restoration ,and I am proud to have conserved his 1956 paint.

no, this body was made for around 30 units: 750 monza or 500 mondial or 118 LM or 121 LM ,in fact my car is probably a 121 LM but 750 monza is more known.
We have the successives Italians owners to 1951 from 1956, the car gone to the USA at the end of the "50" years; Peter Helm a well known American actor owned 117s a few time in 62- 63 and after the car was owned during 40 years by the same owner until 2006.

Hello Menno
I changed to the 355 because
1 I blew up the engine,
2 it was too difficult to drive for my wife
3 I felt that later I would be too old to buy a rear engined car

But although I love the 355, I very much miss the ancient V12 and it pure mechanical behaviour

I hope to get one day another front driven Ferrari, perhaps the rumoured new 2+2 with the folding roof ?

Best greetings

Having been interested in Ferrari's from the age of 8 or so (Magnum PI together with a family friends Dino 246GT) and having owned and restored a number of Ferrari's for the past 15 years. Together with a friend we started servicing and restoring Ferraris for other people part time 5 years ago, I made the jump into working full time with Ferraris and Maserati's in early 2006 when I started www.cso-ferrari.co.uk were still a realtivley small company but each month sees a little growth and a few new customers.

Hello Martteen

wonderfull that you have bought the car & i'm especially glad that you are not fully restoring the car but are preserving it

i actually saw the car in Monterey 2006 when it was sold with RM Auctions after the barn find where it was a late entry, there was a seperate 4 page addendum since it wasn't included in the catalogue.
If you are interested i can scan & mail that to you
there it was purchased by Philippe Olczyk and offered for sale at VanderVeken in Brussels
they also showed the car at Antwerp Classic Salon in march 2007 where it was already cleaned up a bit more

Sam, welcome here! Nice to see someone from 'far away'.

Some things I have noticed on your (very nice) 308! I spotted some differences with other 308. At first the other prancing horse logo on the grille.
Second the other shape wingmirrors. Are they changed because of different road regulations? I am very interested!

By the way! Adelaide, that is familiar because of the street circuit! Do you sometimes attend races

Second the other shape wingmirrors. Are they changed because of different road regulations? Those 'square'/'hooky' big mirrors are USA-style, I thought? Cars were shipped to the US without mirrors, (saved a little space; were put side a side very tight in boats), and in America provided with mirrors. Can anyone ackowledge this

You lost your horse in your grill??? according to that emblem? ;)

If I got it right, the QV model started having a chrome horsey on the grill ... I like it ... But I am a stickler for originality, and I dont think I would feel right putting one on mine. The previous onwner put the emblem/shield on the grill. Now that is a first, have you ever seen a car with an emblem (cough) on the grill .. ?

About a name; i know someone here who calls his car "the bottomless well" ('bodemloze put' in dutch), financially speaking, because it costs a lot of money :D :D. haha .. you gave me a laugh. Some of them are unkind! My car has broken down once, I dont want to tempt it again! Now that was a funny incident .. the car ran out of gas, outside a pub! The pub emptied out so they can have a look at the spectical .. some kindly helped to push the car to the kerb .. the police drove past (in their Ford), smiled, and told me to drive a Ford! :) And then kept on driving!

Anyone got any other funny/embarrasing incidents for a good laugh? Am I starting another thread mid thread

Thank you kindly Erik. You guys are very welcoming. Maybe I should move there! Then I would have to learn Dutch hey Edwin! :)

The mirrors are an interesting difference from the euro cars. Not sure why we got them here. Maybe because are eyes are not as good, we need bigger rear view mirrors! I think with the AUS delivered cars Ferrari assembled them with whatever parts were left over ... for instance, my GTBi has a carburettor car dash & centre console.

By the way! Adelaide, that is familiar because of the street circuit! Do you sometimes attend races?

I've been living in Adelaide since Oct 2007. THey all reminisce about the F1 GP they use to have here years agoo .. however they still use the street circuit for other racing. Acutally, this weekend they have a major event, an annual race called the "Clipsal 100" or something or rather. I suppose I should go since I live here now .. It is taxi cab racing cars with 600hp 5 litre V8's. Good entertainment

I don't know about that last one Robert; "I'm going to take my bitch for a ride" sounds a bit strange to me... ;). btw:great looking car Sam !!:D, I know Paul, in thát sentence it sounds strange. But it sounds a lot less strange when your car frequently don't start. And/or... f.i.: a 360 can be very tricky in high speed corners. If she doesn't do what you want her to do, or she has her own will, and does something you weren't prepared for, and/or you even lost the car in a corner, i reckon you could shout; you b...! :D

Do you all have names for your red cars? I've wanted to have one for mine, but have never got round to coming up with something!

Some 10-15 years ago I had a Ferrari friend from Australia (Max and Roz) and he named his 308 the "Blue Streak". We took him to Kees van Stokkum who knows everything about the Michelotto 308's.

Those 'square'/'hooky' big mirrors are USA-style, I thought? Cars were shipped to the US without mirrors, (saved a little space; were put side a side very tight in boats), and in America provided with mirrors. Can anyone ackowledge this?

Sorry Robert,

those mirrors are not US, i'm not sure how long the were used but i've only seen them on the "i" cars.
That would mean '80, '81 and '82 ??
I've got them on my (euro) '81 308 GTS

Can you post pictures of your centre console and dash.

There have been different setups.
The carb cars had the clock and oil temp meter in the dash.
The first "ï" cars had them stacked in the centre console.
From '81, i'm not sure of the month, they were side by side on the centre console

Hi Jan
Unfortunately all my photos are back in Sydney (with the car) :(

I can say that my car has the GTBi interior, seats, electric mirror etc, except the oil temp gauge and clock is on the dashboard like the carburettor cars, pre 80, not on the centre console. The fuse panel cover does not have the GTBi badge. The odd thing is the QV cars that came here also didnt have the 2 gauges on the centre console either.

I'll post some pics of my cars interior when I am back visiting Sydney.

Anyway, I went w.the relatively uncommon Euro version as I like the aesthetics much better than the US cars. And, no catalytic converter is much nicer!

And of course: the euro-version is much better! :). Easthetical and a little bit more powerful? I see you have a modern stereo-device in yours. I have too. But some prefer the old Becker/Ferrari cassette-players, to keep it totally original / from the 80's. And what a superb motorbike. Great combination; both the ferrari flame-red! great! Here are some facts about me. I am 36 years old. I live in Slovakia in a small village Šoporňa and working in Bratislava in automobilfactory VW. The Ferrari is interested in the autumn of 1984, when I first saw Testarossa in the magazine. This was a great moment in my life, and I started to look at all the history of Ferrari and everything connected with Ferrari. At the time, in the former Czechoslovak Socialist Republic could not find a lot of the more valuable each information. When riding today to work almost daily around the showroom with Ferrari and always will remember how I He dreamed in childhood, or sometimes see the real Ferrari. I am interested in a visit race FIA GT, WTCC and regional races and race uphill. I collect models of F in 1:18 and 1:24 scale. I would like next year, visited the GT race in 24hours Spa Francorchamps. And, of course, sometimes Le Mans:). I will for the Challenge in Brno and the Finali Mondiale. In Slovakia, we ForzaFerrari.sk fans site Thank you take me even if he never about the owner of F not, it's my life-long love. Just found this site yesterday, so i am one of the last additions to this community.
I am Italian, coming from the lake area north of Milan. During the last ten years or so I lived with my family outside Italy, first in UK, then in the Philippines and now in India (but this time family decided to stay home :( ).
In Italy stays my little 328, that I use as daily driver during my visits home.

EugenioWooow Eugenio; you are very welcome here! Fantastic, we could dream about your situation, italian, living in the lake district and with a 328. How often do we dream about driving there? Certainly I do. Especially because I have a 328 gts as well! I know yours is from 86, and mine?... is too! :). 86 was a great year for building Ferrari's! :D.
Have you ever had any serious problems with it, or is everything working well?? So what lake do you live nearby? I have been to Stresa/Verbana and surroundings, the beautiful Lago di Maggiore. Hired a boat for a day and swam in the lake. Great. Do you sometimes go to Maranello. Just to be there? Welcome again. Nice pictures of your car beside the lake!

Thanks for the warm welcome. As a matter of fact, my home in Italy is just 10 km from Lake Maggiore. The one in the picture is Lake Comabbio.
I have had my car since 2003, I am the second owner. Bought it with 18.000 km on the clock and I added 30.000 in the last 5 years. Actually, considering the time spent overseas, my real average usage rate is close to 15.000 km per year.
Up to now no serious problems, just the clutch mainly do to an overcautious approach from my side.
The car works like a dream, I am never tired to drive it.
I was in Maranello for the 60th anniversary and then again for a factory tour last year.
Hope to see you soon.

Ciao Eugenio, I am now making arrangement for visiting various steel mills in India including visits to Calcutta and Mumbai. As you well know is travellling difficult and I hate the trains which means dirty full stations and bad nights in the train trying to sleep. Still do I like India for the atmosphere (I guess). Hi Eugenio, how are things in Mumbai. The number of Fiat 1300 Taxis is rapidly decreasing replaced by these horrible Tata mini cars. I will be in Mumbai in about 2 months but will than continue to Bellary (north of Bangalore), Kolkata area, Hisar (nesr Delhi) and Surat (Gujarat) visiting the major flat steel mills.

Have a nice stay and take care!
ciao,
Menno

Eugenio,

38 degrees is very nice :). But going home and driving the F again must be a very good alternative :D

Now the conditions in Italy are very nice and only getting better for enjoying a 328. My advice is go home! Your business in India must be very good if you stay this long.

My 308 GTBi is 1980 and s/n 33963 red/tan. My ferrari web site is http://www.ferrari308gtbi.com/

Although my web site may look commercial, my labor-of-love is to make wiring diagrams
available to owners who must struggle with impossible poor copies from the owners manual.
Vintage Ferrari owners all know how unuseable the manual copies are.

I have pretty much finished 'colorizing' the 308 series with 4 diagrams. 1978 carbed cars,
early injected cars, US QV and the Euro QV.

I recently started work on the Boxers, almost finished the 365 GT4 2+2 and have begun
the 1980 512 BB and 1981 BBi. These wiring diagrams take about 200+ hours as each
wire and component must be created pixel by pixel in PhotoShop to achieve high resolution.

Whereas the wires in the manual have an Italian abbreviation to show color, the wires in
my diagrams are drawn in color. Whereas the components in the manuals are a balloon
number, the components in my drawings are identified with English text next to the component.

Work on my car is complete, windows are fast now, headlights are bright, seats have been
rejuivenated with Leatherique, changed the time temperature sensor in the valley plate
which caused the 'won't start when hot' problem which everyone eventually has. Changed
14" wheels to 16" QV wheels, with Goodyear Eagle F1's. Belts have been changed 3 times
since I've owned it, and new clutch. But my maintanence costs have been quite reasonable.

I am retired with other interests in fingerstyle guitar, ham radio, and am heavy into
Nikon digital photography. But Ferrari is my main passion, pehaps since I worked in Italy
(and Rio de Janiero) and during 7 years in International Sales with Hewlett Packard, I've
been throughout Europe. Ten years ago, wife and I attended 24hr LeMans and did
the Ferrari factory tour, and are big fans of Formula One.

As the years close in, I now just want to be remembered as Mr. Wiring Diagram.
Sorry for being long and sans photos but thanks again for the warm welcome.

First, may I say how pleased I am to be here. I have observed that the Dutch Ferraristi are some of the most enthusiastic in the world. They are knowledgable and are happy to share their knowledge. Thank you all.

I am Nathan Beehl - a long time Ferraristi, now more than 40 years!
My Ferrari obsession started many years ago and found an outlet through slot car racing and building scale models. Over the years I have built up a collection of hundreds of books, magazine articles, memorabilia, photos and brochures about all manner of Ferraris.

Back in the early ‘80s I established what was then the world’s first and only exclusively Ferrari shop. Regrettably Nathan’s Studio, like many businesses, was a victim of the ‘90s recession, but I still pursues my Ferrari passion through collecting and writing.

I have written for;
‘Cavallino’ – the magazine of Ferrari history
‘Ferrari’ – the magazine of the Ferrari Owners Club UK
‘Prancing Horse’ - the magazine of the Ferrari Club of America (FCA) and other magazines

I have written 6 Ferrari titles;
Ferrari Supercars
Haynes Superprofile: Ferrari Daytona
Haynes Superprofile: Ferrari Dino
Ferrari P Series Sports Racing Cars
Ferrari 512S/M Sports Racing Cars
Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer - the Road & Race Legends

If I can help any Ferraristi with photos, information etc please email me, and I will help if I can.
Nathan
PS - It's not my 599 - it was the factory demonstrator

Paul, welcome at F-chat! I totaly missed your post.
That must be a lot of work to make a wiring diagram.
You like digital photography, maybe you can show us some nice pics from your 308 GTBi?

Nathan, also welcome at F-chat!
Great to have you here, as a writer about Ferrari! I already know your name from the books!
I think I remember the 599 demo car very wel! Saw this car in Maranello during the Ferrari celebrations with Schumacher:

Hi Nathan,

Welcome!

As already mentioned by Gerard, we've got a special section on memorabilia, books and literature. Hope to see you there...maybe it can be used instead of the yahoo Ferrari Collectibles.

Welcome Nathan!

At last, the historians have arrived! I have Haynes Superprofile Ferrari Daytona & Haynes Superprofile Ferrari Dino on my bookshelf, nice to see the writer here on f-chat.eu.
Hope you will enjoy this site, although most of the information is in Dutch.
